What "Scalable" Actually Means to a Technical Due Diligence Team

Scalability in diligence is a cost question with a specific denominator, not an engineering adjective.

When a reviewer asks whether the system scales, they are asking what happens to cost and effort when the business is three times its current size. Traffic capacity is only part of it.

The three dimensions tested

  • Technical: does throughput hold at three times the load
  • Economic: does infrastructure cost per unit fall or hold flat
  • Operational: does the team size required grow proportionally

Failing the third dimension is the most common outcome and the most expensive one, because headcount is the hardest cost to reverse.
