SOC 2 Isn't Enough: What Technical Buyers Check Beyond Compliance
A clean report proves a control framework existed during an observation window. Buyers test whether the practice held afterwards.
Compliance attestation and security posture overlap but are not the same thing. Technical reviewers treat the report as a starting point and then look at the systems directly.
What gets checked past the certificate
- Actual permission grants in cloud and source control
- Secret rotation history rather than secret rotation policy
- Dependency vulnerability backlog and its age
- Whether logging would reconstruct an incident after the fact
Alignment between the framework and the systems is the signal. Divergence suggests the controls were built for the audit.
