Runbooks, Onboarding Docs, and Other Diligence Table Stakes
A short list of artefacts that every buyer requests and most sellers assemble in a panic during week one.
These documents do not impress anyone. Their absence, however, is read as a proxy for how the engineering organization is run, and that reading is usually correct.
The expected set
- Runbooks for the incidents that have actually occurred
- Onboarding guide validated by the most recent hire
- Deployment and rollback procedure with named approvers
- Vendor and service inventory with owners and renewal dates
- Backup and restore procedure with a tested restore date
The last item is the one most often claimed and least often demonstrated. Test it before someone asks.
